Robbinsville High

Robbinsville High is a small, rural high school in Graham County, North Carolina, serving 332 students in grades 9–12, and it is the only high school in the Graham County Schools district. The school currently holds a one-star rating and ranks 566th out of 662 high schools statewide — a sharp drop from recent years, when it typically ranked in the mid-range percentile. Robbinsville serves an extremely high-poverty student population (99% eligible for free/reduced-price lunch), but that alone does not explain its performance, since neighboring schools serve similarly high-poverty families and fare much better.

Robbinsville's End-of-Course test results are below state averages in every core subject, and the school trails most nearby schools as well. In English II, for example, 47% of students scored proficient compared to the state average of 65%; Hayesville High (about 20 miles away) and Andrews High (about 9 miles away) both achieve significantly higher proficiency in that subject, and in Biology and Math I as well. This past year's results also represent a sharp one-year decline: just the year before, Robbinsville was at or above state averages in English II and Math I, and the school historically ranked in the 56th–61st percentile between 2015 and 2019. Because the school is small, one or two grade-level cohorts can cause large swings, but nearly every academic metric dropped at the same time, making this a warning sign worth investigating.

There are bright spots to build on. Robbinsville's chronic absenteeism rate of 23.8% is below the state average and far better than Hayesville's 36.6%, and its 88.5% graduation rate is slightly above the state average. The school has also shown real strength in serving its Native American students, ranking in the 80th percentile statewide for that group as recently as 2023–24, though that figure fell to the 36th percentile in the most recent year. Per-student spending is on par with Hayesville and Andrews, so the school is not severely under-resourced. With attendance and graduation as solid foundations — and nearby schools proving that high-poverty communities can achieve stronger results — the clear priority at Robbinsville is improving academic proficiency in core subjects before the downward trend becomes permanent.
