The school sits in the scenic rural mountains of far western North Carolina and serves a student body with very high economic need, as nearly 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Academic rankings have declined over the years, and the school now sits at the 33rd percentile statewide for 2025–2026, placing it in the lower-middle range among neighboring rural high schools.
