Summary

Gatesville Elementary is a PK–5 school in Gatesville, NC, serving 252 students in the Gates County Schools district. The school's recent ranking history has been a rollercoaster: it dropped to a 1-star rating in 2024–25, then rebounded to a 3-star rating at the 57th percentile in 2025–26. That turnaround was driven largely by third-grade reading, which jumped from just 20% proficiency to 63.4% in a single year.

The school has several genuine bright spots worth celebrating. Third-grade math proficiency is extraordinary at 97.6%, well above the 66.4% state average. Attendance is another advantage: chronic absenteeism stands at 20.7%, below both the state (24.2%) and nearby schools like Riverview Elementary (33.3%) and Buckland Elementary (27.9%). Most encouragingly, the school's economically disadvantaged students — roughly 60% of the student body — scored at the 86th percentile compared with their peers statewide, showing Gatesville is especially effective with the students it serves.

The main challenge is inconsistency beyond the early grades. By 5th grade, math (60%), reading (50%), and science (55%) all trail state averages, with science a notable 13 points behind. The gap with T S Cooper Elementary, the district's highest-ranked school, is striking: both serve similar poverty levels, yet T S Cooper posts dramatically higher 5th-grade scores (78.6% math vs. 60%, and 85.2% science vs. 55%). Gatesville does outperform Buckland Elementary in most subjects despite having more low-income students, but sustaining its early-grade success through the upper grades remains the key to lifting its ranking further. The rising student-teacher ratio (now 16.5, up from 12.3) is a trend worth monitoring.
