East Forsyth Middle School serves 772 students in grades 6–8 in Kernersville, North Carolina, and is part of the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district. The school has ranked among the lowest-performing middle schools in the state for years, currently sitting in the 8th percentile of North Carolina schools with a 0-star rating. Nearly every student—99.6%—qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and chronic absenteeism is a significant challenge: 44.5% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, compared with 33.6% across the district and 24.2% statewide.

Academically, proficiency rates in math and reading run well below state averages in every grade. For example, just 17.1% of 8th graders scored proficient in math versus roughly 53% statewide, and reading proficiency sits in the low 30s, compared with state averages near 56%. The clearest bright spot is 8th grade science, where 55.4% of students scored proficient—much closer to the state average of 68.6% and ahead of several nearby schools, including Wiley Magnet and Southeast Middle. Still, no student group at the school performs near the statewide median, and learning gaps tend to widen by 8th grade.

What makes East Forsyth Middle School's results especially striking is the comparison to nearby schools serving similar student populations. Kernersville Middle, just over 3 miles away, also serves an almost entirely economically disadvantaged student body (98.9% free/reduced-price lunch) yet ranks in the 53rd percentile statewide with far stronger proficiency rates. Walkertown Middle, also about 3 miles away, has a 99.4% poverty rate but posts an 8th grade math proficiency rate of 61.6%—more than triple East Forsyth's rate. Chronic absenteeism appears to be a key difference: Kernersville Middle's rate is just 21.3%, less than half of East Forsyth's 44.5%. These comparisons suggest that improving attendance and reversing the slide in 8th grade math should be top priorities for the school moving forward.

My experience at East Forsyth Middle School was amazing. I was beyond prepared for high school. I was constantly pushed to be the best I could be. The teachers were the best, as they always supported me, as well as other students in everything we did. I always felt like they believed in me. At East, I knew I was going to succeed. My daughter goes to East Forsyth Middle. This is my third child to attend this school by choice. Since I live in Forsyth County, we have the choice of which school our children attends. We have only had positive experiences at this school. The school is very diverse and I feel that is a true reflection of the High School she will attend. The teachers and staff are outstanding and supportive. I am a true believer that the school is only as good as the class your child is in and we have only experienced great teachers. Yes the average test score is lower than those in our are however since our children all fall in advanced classes, these lower test scores has not affected them. In fact they have all scored higher than both the county and state. Close Quote
