Summary

Parkland High is a public magnet high school serving grades 9-12 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. With a student population of 1,638, the school is part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district, which is ranked 159 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its magnet school designation, Parkland High consistently underperforms compared to district and state averages on end-of-course exams. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 22% of Parkland High students were proficient or better in Biology EOC, compared to 45.5% for the district and 48.3% for the state. The school's 4-year graduation rate of 80-87% is also lower than the state average. Parkland High struggles to effectively serve certain student subgroups, with significantly lower rankings for African American, Hispanic, and low-socioeconomic status students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County district show a wide range of performance. Atkins Academic & Technical High, another magnet school, consistently outperforms Parkland High and the district/state averages on EOC exams. In contrast, schools like J.F. Kennedy High and Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy also struggle academically, similar to Parkland High. Despite Parkland High's high per-student spending, the school's performance lags behind other high-performing schools in the district, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to improving student outcomes.

Open Quote Listen, we were underfunded and understaffed and overlooked by the school board. The students and teachers did the best they could. But, it's hard to learn in an environment where most students are treated like criminals, and the teachers can barely pay their bills. The administration is at fault. The school board is at fault. Parkland is what you make of it. You can develop meaningful relationships with students and teachers, and the IB program is not to be overlooked. However, when compared with wealthy schools like Reagan, Parkland is so lacking in resources that it is often difficult for students to succeed. It's tough to be a Parkland student, through no fault of our own. But, students from Parkland have gone onto universities like Harvard, Yale, Wake Forest, George Washington University, NC State, Boston College, University of Chicago, and UNC. When given the time, support, and energy from teachers and administrators that we need, we can go on to do great things. Close Quote

Open Quote I go to parkland, and theres not much interesting to say about it. the same students that I went to philo middle school with now go here, and I think the people who go here are often stupid and immature. I dont have much in common with them, the teachers are ok but sometimes overwhelmed by the students. I cant wait until Im done at parkland. Close Quote
