Summary

Robert B Glenn High School is a large traditional public high school in Kernersville, NC, serving 1,396 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district.

Robert B Glenn High School has seen a decade-long slide in state performance, dropping from the 36th percentile in 2015–2016 to the 9th percentile (601 out of 662) in 2025–2026. Its graduation rate of 75.5% trails the district's 86.3% and the state's 88.8%, a gap that has persisted for five years. Chronic absenteeism affects 54.6% of its students — more than twice the state rate of 24.2% — and test proficiency lags badly in every subject. Just 16.2% of students pass Math I, compared to 42.1% statewide, and only 25.9% pass Biology versus 58.5% statewide. Even the school's Gifted and Talented students ranked at the 0th percentile in 2024–2025, indicating systemic struggles across all student groups.

The contrasts with nearby schools are striking. East Forsyth High, roughly four miles away, has nearly identical poverty levels (99.82% free/reduced lunch) yet graduates 91.0% of students and posts a chronic absenteeism rate of just 29.2%. J F Kennedy High, about seven miles away, also serves a very high-poverty population yet graduates 90.0% of students and passes 43.1% on Math I — nearly three times Glenn's rate. These schools demonstrate that poverty does not have to determine outcomes. Glenn's struggles appear most closely tied to absenteeism and early math readiness, and at $8,839 per student, its spending is well below several neighboring high schools. Reducing chronic absence, strengthening Math I instruction, and improving graduation rates are the clearest priorities for turning the school around.
