Summary

Bolton Elementary is a public elementary school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 363 students. The school is part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district, which is ranked 159 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bolton Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with rankings ranging from 1080 to 1329 out of around 1500 schools over the past 10 years. The school has received a 1-star or 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state. Bolton Elementary's proficiency rates on state standardized tests (EOG) are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with the school's strongest performance in 5th grade science. However, in 3rd and 4th grade reading and math, Bolton Elementary's proficiency rates are 10-20 percentage points below the district and state.

While Bolton Elementary serves a predominantly low-income student population, with an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school's challenges appear to go beyond just socioeconomic factors. The wide range of performance among nearby schools in the same district, such as Whitaker Elementary and Sherwood Forest Elementary, which rank among the top schools in the state, suggests that factors specific to Bolton Elementary, such as school leadership, teacher quality, or instructional practices, may be contributing to the school's struggles. Addressing these school-level factors could be crucial in improving outcomes for the students at Bolton Elementary.

Open Quote My daughter just started kindergarten at Bolton and I am very concerned about her education. The school is lacking in technology and it is very dimly lit, making it hard to see how run down the school truly is. We are a middle class family and were told lunch was free, no application needed. I fear for her education as many students are not proficiently English speaking. We are trying very hard to transfer her to a school with higher performance scores only to be denied the transfer. I called the county student assignment office and the receptionist told me that test score aren't that important. I beg to differ!! Close Quote
