Summary

R N Harris Elementary in Durham, NC, serves 313 students in grades PK-5 in a high-need community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For 2025-2026, the school ranks at the 36th percentile statewide with a 2-star rating, placing it right around the overall performance of Durham Public Schools.

There are genuine bright spots worth noting. Fifth graders posted strong results in science (78.4% proficient) and math (67.3% proficient), both above district and state averages, and African American students have shown solid outcomes relative to statewide peers in recent years. However, reading is the clear area of concern — proficiency rates in grades 3 through 5 lag well behind the state, with fewer than half of students meeting the bar in most tested grades. Chronic absenteeism is also a significant issue: 38.6% of students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, a rate that has remained stubbornly high for five straight years and is well above the statewide average of 24.2%.

The school's history has been volatile, swinging from an 80th-percentile ranking in 2022-2023 to the bottom fifth just two years later, before recovering to its current middle range — a pattern that suggests inconsistency rather than a steady trend. A nearby comparison makes the stakes clear: Burton Elementary, located less than a mile away, serves a nearly identical high-poverty population yet achieves far stronger reading results, such as 75.6% proficiency in 5th-grade reading versus 45.3% at R N Harris Elementary. That gap shows the school's outcomes are not predetermined by demographics. R N Harris has real academic strengths to build on, but families should ask hard questions about reading support, attendance, and consistency when considering this school.
