Summary

Fayetteville Street Elementary is a PK–5 school in Durham Public Schools serving 261 students in an intensely high-poverty area of Durham, NC, where more than 97% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has historically ranked near the bottom of North Carolina elementary schools, currently placing in the 17th percentile statewide with a 1-star rating, though it has improved modestly from its low point a few years ago.

The single most distinguishing challenge at this school is chronic absenteeism. At 52.9% in 2024–2025, it is double the district rate and more than twice the state rate, and it is dramatically higher than every nearby school—including C C Spaulding Elementary (45.8%) and Lakewood Elementary (around 30%). Academically, reading proficiency is notably weak: only about 38.6% of 3rd–5th graders are proficient in reading, compared with roughly 51.7% for the district. Fourth grade reading is a particular trough at 31.7% proficiency. However, there are nuances: 5th grade science proficiency reached 61.9% in 2025–2026, essentially matching the district, and 5th graders overall perform much closer to district averages than younger students do. English Language Learner support also appears to have improved sharply, jumping from the 22nd percentile statewide to the 66th percentile in one year.

Comparisons with nearby high-poverty schools are instructive. W G Pearson Elementary, less than half a mile away, has nearly identical poverty rates yet posts better test scores, a higher statewide rank (30th versus 17th percentile), and far lower chronic absenteeism (33.5% versus 52.9%). Similarly, Morehead Montessori and Burton Elementary achieve much higher rankings while serving virtually the same economic demographic. This does not mean Fayetteville Street cannot improve—its occasional strong subgroup results and relative success in 5th grade science show that progress is possible—but addressing the extraordinarily high absenteeism rate appears to be the most critical lever for improving both academic outcomes and the overall school experience for families.
