Jarvisburg Elementary

Jarvisburg Elementary is a small K–5 school serving 218 students in the rural coastal community of Jarvisburg, North Carolina, as part of Currituck County Schools. Over the past decade, the school has climbed from the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools to a consistent spot in the top quarter, currently ranking 372nd out of 1,492 schools with a 4-star rating.

Jarvisburg’s fifth-graders are a standout group, outperforming both the district and state in math, reading, and science — 82.2% are proficient in science, for example, versus 67.7% statewide. The school is also notably effective with students from low-income families, which matters because roughly 60% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Jarvisburg edges out nearby W T Griggs Elementary in overall state ranking (372nd vs. 411th), and both schools sit far ahead of Central Elementary (903rd). While the two top Currituck schools trade wins by subject, Jarvisburg dominates in fifth-grade math, fifth-grade science, and third-grade reading.

Still, Jarvisburg faces clear challenges. More than one in four students is chronically absent — a rate well above W T Griggs, which has a similar economic profile but a much lower absenteeism rate. There is also a persistent gender gap: girls rank near the 90th percentile statewide while boys sit near the 60th. And a single-year dip in fourth-grade reading (46.5% proficient, well below the district’s 58.9%) is worth watching, even though prior years saw that grade score far higher. The school’s success with economically disadvantaged students is remarkable, but improving attendance and closing the gender gap could unlock even more growth.
