Summary

Central Elementary is a public elementary school located in Barco, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 261 students. It is part of the Currituck County Schools district, which is ranked 40 out of 242 school districts in North Carolina and is rated 4 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger.

While Central Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools over the past 10 years. Its performance on state assessments is generally below the district and state averages, particularly for certain student subgroups, such as White students and low socioeconomic status students. The school has also seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 27.68% in 2021-2022 to 42.91% in 2023-2024, which may contribute to its academic challenges.

Comparing Central Elementary to the stronger-performing nearby schools in the Currituck County Schools district, such as Moyock Elementary, Knotts Island Elementary, and W.T. Griggs Elementary, highlights the need for Central Elementary to identify and address the specific factors contributing to its underperformance. Developing a comprehensive plan to improve academic achievement, particularly for the school's underperforming subgroups, should be a top priority for the school and district leadership.

Open Quote Though this school has a high number of free and reduce lunch, the students meet expected growth in testing. The staff is very loving and spends a lot of time with students. They have an innovative leadership program which started here and is spreading to other schools. They strongly encourage parent involvement and sincerely focus on the individual needs of students. Don't let the numbers discourage you because there is more to learning than just testing. This school has it! Close Quote
