Summary

Moncure School is an elementary school serving grades K-8 in Moncure, North Carolina, with 184 students enrolled. The school is part of the Chatham County Schools district, which is ranked 72 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Moncure School faces several challenges, including lower test scores compared to the district and state averages, as well as a declining statewide ranking over the past few years. For example, in 2024-2025, only 9.5% of 3rd graders at Moncure were proficient in reading, compared to 47.9% in the district and 46.7% statewide. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated but has generally been in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools, with a ranking between 488 and 837 out of 1,500+ schools. Additionally, Moncure School's performance varies significantly by student subgroup, with female students, white students, and low socioeconomic status students performing lower than the overall school.

However, Moncure School's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12 to 13.4 students per teacher, could be an asset, as it may allow for more individualized attention and support for students. The school's location within the Chatham County Schools district, which is rated 4 out of 5 stars, also suggests that there may be opportunities for the school to learn from and collaborate with higher-performing schools in the district, such as Olive Chapel Elementary and Apex Friendship Elementary in the Wake County Schools district, which have significantly higher test scores and statewide rankings.

Open Quote Before raising my own children, I worked as a high school teacher and teacher's assistant for an elementary and middle school. An often overlooked indicator of a great school is teacher retention, and I know that Moncure keeps good teachers because they are supported by administration and parents. The PTA has done an outstanding job at raising funds for technology, athletics, and arts programs that would otherwise be omitted due to state-wide budget cuts. Most of all, I love that Moncure is small enough that every child is valued and instruction is customized for individual abilities to ensure everyone is learning. Close Quote
