As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I need to give a SHOUTOUT to our local public middle school, George Moses Horton. GMH is AMAZING! The work that the faculty and staff at GMH are doing to educate and support our local youth is both impressive and inspirational!

As a parent, being able to send your child(ren) to a school where you know that they will be safe and nurtured, both academically and emotionally, is a tremendous sense of relief. I cannot adequately express how happy our family has been that we made the difficult decision to take our child out of nationally top-ranked NC charter school, and enroll them at GMH.

As an educator, community member and parent, I encourage everyone to check out all of the awesome things GMH is doing for the youth in our community. Close Quote

Open Quote I must admit that based on other reviews I was a tad nervous to send my daughter here. However, I am pleasantly surprised! The principal has been very understanding and supportive and I am thrilled that my daughter was able to participate in Theater Club last year. It's obvious that the staff care about these kiddos and I am happy to be part of the GMH community. Close Quote

Open Quote My 8th grade year was in 2016, I liked working with some teachers, but overall i was disappointing in the experience. In Iv been in classrooms where over half the class was removed for misconduct. Also its very difficult to be allowed to use the restroom. Often times we are told to reduce our volume at lunch because the library is above the lunch room... It was a great day when i left the 8th grade hall, my experience being completed. Close Quote

Open Quote Many teachers are sarcastic, patronizing- admin is dismissive and inconsistent- discipline is punitive and entirely ineffective (disruption and bullying are common, as is vandalism in the bathrooms)- the environment is hostile for certain grade levels- students are given very little freedom to express themselves or even use the bathroom. I don't suggest sending anyone you love here, especially if they don't "fit the mold", if they are high achievers, or if they have a personality or thoughts of any sort. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
