Summary

Saint Stephens High is a public high school in Hickory, North Carolina, serving 1,298 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Catawba County Schools district, which is ranked 82 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Saint Stephens High has consistently performed above the state average on end-of-course (EOC) exams, particularly in Math III (74.7% proficient in 2024-2025 vs. 66.4% statewide) and English II (58.1% proficient in 2024-2025 vs. 59.6% statewide). The school also maintains a high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 86.2% to 90.9% over the past few years, on par with or slightly above the state and district averages. Additionally, Saint Stephens High has performed well in supporting its English Language Learner (ELL) students, ranking in the top 25% of North Carolina high schools for this subgroup in recent years.

When compared to nearby schools, Saint Stephens High stands out as a relatively strong performer, outperforming Bunker Hill High (another Catawba County school) on most academic metrics. However, the school faces some socioeconomic challenges, with a relatively high percentage of students (56.86% in 2023-2024) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite this, Saint Stephens High has been able to maintain strong academic performance, suggesting effective strategies for supporting economically disadvantaged students. One area of potential concern is the performance of the school's special education students, who have consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of North Carolina high schools in this subgroup.

Open Quote Saint Stephens High is currently ranked 8th in the state in NC. Our graduation rate is excellent as well as test scores. The most exemplary part of this is that we have the largest ESL and EC population in the area. We have at least a third of our teachers with advanced degrees and many with National Board Certification as well. Close Quote
