ECU Community School is a very small K-5 elementary school in Greenville, NC, serving just 108 students and operating as part of the East Carolina Community School district, which ranks higher than the surrounding Pitt County Schools district. Despite serving a very high-poverty population (over 97% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch), the school has shown a remarkable upward climb from the bottom 2% of North Carolina elementary schools in 2018-2019 to the 67th percentile statewide in 2025-2026.

The school’s biggest academic strength is math and science, especially in 5th grade, where math proficiency reached 90% in 2025-2026 — well above the state average of 63% and higher than nearby Wintergreen Intermediate (79%) and Ridgewood Elementary (78%). However, early-grade reading remains a serious weakness: 3rd grade reading proficiency was just 35.7% in 2025-2026, compared with 55.6% statewide. That gap narrows by 5th grade, where reading reached 75% in the latest school year, but the pattern of weak early literacy is consistent. Compared with South Greenville Elementary, a traditional district school at the same address, ECU dramatically outperformed it in almost every subject in 2025-2026, including 5th grade math (90% vs. 45%) and 5th grade reading (75% vs. 19%).
