Lakeforest Elementary is a large PK–5 school in Greenville, North Carolina, serving about 821 students in the Pitt County Schools district, where nearly 98 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has historically ranked well below the state average, but it is now showing its strongest results in a decade: its statewide ranking climbed from the 8th percentile in 2016–2017 and the 17th percentile as recently as 2023–2024 to the 32nd percentile in 2025–2026, earning a 2-star rating.

Several bright spots explain that momentum. Chronic absenteeism, which topped 39 percent in 2020–2021, has fallen to 21.9 percent—almost identical to the district rate of 21.7 percent and better than the state average of 24.2 percent. Fifth-grade science has also become a relative strength, with 63.1 percent proficiency in 2025–2026 versus 67.7 percent statewide, after exceeding the state average the previous year. Students from low-income families lifted their statewide ranking from the 23rd to the 46th percentile in just two years, and special education students are performing near the middle of the pack statewide for their group.

Still, Lakeforest trails several nearby schools serving similarly high-poverty populations. While Lakeforest sits at the 32nd percentile, Ridgewood Elementary—just two miles away with nearly identical poverty rates—ranks at the 80th percentile with far higher proficiency in reading, math, and science. Eastern Elementary, Creekside Elementary, and W H Robinson Elementary also post stronger results. The most urgent gaps are in third grade: math proficiency of 47.9 percent trails the state's 66.4 percent by nearly 19 points, and reading proficiency of 43.7 percent trails by about 12. Spending does not explain the gap—Lakeforest's per-pupil spending is in line with higher-performing neighbors, while Wahl Coates Elementary and South Greenville Elementary spend more yet rank lower. With attendance improving and science already near state averages, the school appears well-positioned to keep closing the gap.
