IC Imagine is a K-12 Alternative school in Asheville, NC, serving 1,239 students in the Invest Collegiate - Imagine district. It is substantially larger than nearby FernLeaf (763 students) and Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (296 students), pairing a strong academic profile with the feel of a sizable, full K-12 community.

IC Imagine’s strongest results are in reading and End-of-Course exams. Average reading proficiency across grades 3–8 is 64.9%, well above the state’s 56.0%, with especially strong middle-school scores: 6th grade reading is 74.5% proficient versus 54.8% statewide, and 7th grade reading is 72.4% versus 56.3%. On End-of-Course tests, IC Imagine tops the state in all four core subjects, including Biology (80% proficient vs. 58.5%) and English II (86.5% vs. 64.6%). The school also has low chronic absenteeism at 17.0%, well below the state’s 24.2% and the 28.3% at Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy, and its 13.3-to-1 student-teacher ratio is more favorable than FernLeaf’s 14.3-to-1.

A few areas deserve attention. Math is uneven, and 8th grade math is the clearest weakness: only 42.2% of 8th graders are proficient versus 53.0% statewide, even though those same students read well above average. Science is another relative soft spot — FernLeaf posts 85.4% 8th-grade science proficiency compared with 67.6% at IC Imagine. The graduation rate also fell to 83.8%, below the state’s 88.8%, after several strong years. Overall, IC Imagine offers genuine strengths in literacy and high-school readiness, but parents may want to ask how the school plans to address middle-school math and its recent graduation decline.
