Newland Elementary is a small, rural PK–5 school in Newland, North Carolina, serving 214 students in the Avery County Schools district, where nearly 97% of students are eligible for free/reduced lunch. The school's statewide ranking tells a difficult story: it has declined from the 67th percentile in 2016–17 to the 29th percentile in the most recent year, earning a 1-star rating. That places Newland below every other elementary school in Avery County Schools, including Banner Elk Elementary at the 92nd percentile, Freedom Trail Elementary at the 63rd, Riverside Elementary at the 54th, and Crossnore Elementary at the 53rd.
