Summary

Crossnore Elementary is a small, rural PK–5 school in Crossnore, North Carolina, serving 184 students as part of Avery County Schools. Nearly all students (98%) come from low-income households, and the school keeps a low 12.1 student-to-teacher ratio. Crossnore’s ranking history has been a roller coaster: 70th statewide in 2015-16, 763rd in 2018-19, back into the 200s in the early 2020s, and now near 699th out of about 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools (53rd percentile).

The school’s standout strength is attendance. Chronic absenteeism — the share of students missing many school days — is just 5.3%. That’s dramatically lower than the state average of 24.2%, the district’s 20.2%, and nearby Freedom Trail Elementary (26.4%), Newland Elementary (22.2%), and Riverside Elementary (19.7%). Crossnore also excels in math and science by 5th grade: math proficiency is 84%, about 21 points above the state, and actually tops Banner Elk Elementary’s strong 83.3%. Science comes in at 80% — roughly 19 points above the state and nearly 8 points above Banner Elk.

Reading, however, is a serious and persistent weakness. Only 32.3% of third-graders read proficiently, compared with 55.6% statewide — and that gap has held across recent years: 37.5% in 2022-23, 42.9% in 2023-24, 41.0% in 2024-25, and 32.3% in 2025-26. Fourth- and fifth-grade reading also trail state averages. With only 30–40 students per grade, a handful of students can swing rankings sharply, but the multi-year reading trend is not just noise. Crossnore currently ranks fourth among Avery County’s five elementary schools, behind Banner Elk Elementary (114th), Freedom Trail Elementary (557th), and Riverside Elementary (692nd). Because attendance is so strong, the clearest path forward is a sustained early-literacy strategy — one that could return Crossnore to the top quartile of North Carolina elementary schools.
