Summary

Taylorsville Elementary is a small PK–5 school in Taylorsville, NC, serving about 241 students in Alexander County Schools, where nearly all students (about 99%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has an unusual story: it was once a top-performing, high-poverty school and has recently slipped to mid-pack. Its state ranking has fallen from the 83rd percentile just a few years ago to the 46th percentile today, meaning it now ranks roughly in the middle of North Carolina elementary schools.

The decline, however, is not happening across the board. On the most recent end-of-grade tests, Taylorsville's 3rd and 4th graders beat both district and state averages in reading and math, with 4th grade math a standout at 80% proficiency. The trouble appears in 5th grade: reading and math scores drop below district and state averages, while 5th grade science is the biggest concern, with only 41% of students proficient compared to roughly 66% districtwide. Nearby Hiddenite Elementary, which serves a nearly identical high-poverty population, posted an 80% proficiency rate in the same subject, so poverty alone doesn't explain the gap. This upper-elementary weakness has been growing over several years and is now the school's clearest area for improvement.

Taylorsville also has unusual resource patterns. It spends more per student ($12,141) than any neighboring elementary school but also has the largest class sizes among its Alexander County peers — and that extra money hasn't translated into better results. There is positive news on attendance: chronic absenteeism has fallen from about 30% to 17% in two years and is now below the state average. For context, Bethlehem Elementary, a similar high-poverty school about 9 miles away in the same district, ranks in the 75th percentile while spending roughly $2,800 less per student. The bottom line for parents: Taylorsville's early grades look solid, but the sharp fifth-grade slide — especially in science — is the key issue to watch.

In three years they have my 2nd grader reading way above grade level and nurtured him to astonishing growth! Amazing school and loving staff! A staff that communicates not just across grades for the students but very well with the parents focusing on positive growth of each individual child. I have worked in other school systems. Some of the teachers care about the students,then there are other teachers that I believe don't even bother with the students. You don't know your child has a problem until the school year is almost over and you can't do nothing. A teacher sent papers home to me suggesting that my child be checked for ADHD,I think this happened only because some of the teachers want the students to be like zombies also visited the class and seen some things I thought were wrong. I will be looking into a better school next year. Close Quote
