Luther Nick Jeralds Middle is a 6–8 middle school in Fayetteville, NC, serving 605 students within the Cumberland County Schools district, where 96.5% of students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. The school has ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina middle schools for most of the past decade; its most recent statewide ranking places it at the 21st percentile (1 star), a slight improvement from 2024-25 but still below its own performance from two years earlier.

One of the most striking findings is chronic absenteeism: 58.3% of Luther students were chronically absent in 2024-25, far higher than the district rate of 33.7% and state rate of 24.2%. Academic proficiency trails both district and state averages in every tested subject. Math is especially weak — no grade level reaches 40% proficiency, with 7th-grade math at 33.9% versus the state's 56.2%. Reading gaps are smaller but still present. These challenges stand out against nearby schools with similar poverty levels: Reid Ross Classical Middle, located just 0.65 miles away and serving a comparable population, ranks at the 71st percentile statewide with 21.6% chronic absenteeism and 75% proficiency in 7th-grade math. R. Max Abbott Middle and Anne Chesnutt Middle also serve student bodies with nearly universal free/reduced-price lunch eligibility yet post far stronger outcomes. Luther's student-teacher ratio of 18.6 is also higher than most nearby middle schools, including Mac Williams Middle and Westover Middle.

Luther is not uniformly low-performing, however. English Learner students rank at the 72nd percentile statewide, and Hispanic students at the 57th percentile — relative bright spots. Eighth-grade science proficiency (59.6%) is within 9 points of the state average, and the school showed improvement in several subjects in 2025-26, including 8th-grade math and science. The most urgent issue appears to be attendance, since more than half of students are missing significant instructional time. Given that nearby schools with similar demographics achieve much better results, Luther's current outcomes are not inevitable, and focusing on attendance and on strategies already working in science and reading could provide a path forward.
