Summary

Morganton Road Elementary is a PK–5 school in Fayetteville's Cumberland County Schools that serves 491 students and currently ranks in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools. Nearly all of its students (99.4%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the school holds a one-star rating on SchoolDigger. Morganton Road ranks 1,098th out of 1,492 elementary schools statewide, placing it in the 26th percentile and below its own district's overall position.

Academically, Morganton Road trails both the district and the state in most reading and math measures, but the most striking challenge is a concentrated grade-level gap. Current 4th graders are far behind: only 28.6% are proficient in math and 33.8% in reading, compared with state averages of 61.4% and 57.7%. This appears to be a specific cohort issue, because these same students were already struggling as 3rd graders in 2024–25 when just 33% were proficient in math and 28.4% in reading. By contrast, current 5th graders are much closer to state averages in reading, and 5th-grade science is a genuine bright spot: 70.5% proficient, above both the district (65.8%) and state (67.7%). The school has outperformed the state in 5th-grade science in most recent years, even while other subjects lagged.

Chronic absenteeism is a major concern, with 36.8% of students chronically absent versus the state rate of 24.2%. Nearby comparisons show this is not simply a poverty problem. Ponderosa Elementary, just half a mile away with a similar student population, ranks in the 44th percentile and bests Morganton Road in most subjects. E E Miller Elementary has nearly identical poverty (99.5%) but a chronic absenteeism rate of only 18.3% and stronger reading and math scores. These comparisons suggest Morganton Road's results are not an unavoidable outcome of demographics, and that focused attention on attendance and the current 4th-grade cohort could make a meaningful difference.

Open Quote My son has been a student at Morganton Road Elementary School for the past three years. The staff and teachers at MRES are caring, compassionate, intelligent, and innovative. Despite challenges, the school community and PTA continues to grow and pull together to support the wonderful students and faculty at MRES. Close Quote

Open Quote I feel that the faculty does not take the time to listen to what is going on in their own classrooms with their students. My child is having trouble with some of the other children, being bullied, and when he went to go and talk to someone about it they brushed him off. I understand children need to be able to stick up for themselves but this has been going on for almost a year and a half. And yes I have been to the school to talk with the old principal but have since gotten a new one.
Not to mention this is now affecting his grades. At his old school before we moved he was an A and B student, those grades are now D's and F's.
Not happy with this school! Close Quote
