Summary

Cumberland Mills Elementary is a PK–5 school in Fayetteville, NC, serving 573 students in the Cumberland County Schools district, where nearly all students (96.7%) come from economically disadvantaged households. The district itself carries a 2-star rating, and Cumberland Mills Elementary currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 20th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools — a marked drop from the 2015–2019 period when it regularly landed near the middle of the state. Performance has stabilized recently, but the school has not returned to its earlier mid-pack standing.

Cumberland Mills trails district and state averages in nearly every tested subject and grade. The clearest red flag is 3rd grade math, where 39.6% of students are proficient — about 22 points below the district and 27 points below the state. Chronic absenteeism is also a serious barrier: at 36.6%, the rate tops the state average of 24.2% and is the second highest among 10 nearby elementary schools, exceeded only by Brentwood Elementary at 37.2%. The school also carries the area's highest student-teacher ratio at 17.3, while most neighboring schools sit in the 13–16 range.

The story is not uniformly discouraging, though. English language learners improved dramatically from the 1st to the 50th percentile statewide in two years, and Hispanic, African American, and low-income students all perform closer to the state median than the school's overall ranking suggests. What stands out most is that E. Melvin Honeycutt Elementary — just 1.4 miles away, with an even higher poverty rate of 99.6% — ranks in the 82nd percentile, while Rockfish Elementary, also nearby, sits in the 63rd percentile. Both schools have far lower chronic absenteeism. Special education is the one area in clear decline, falling from the 19th percentile to the 2nd percentile over two years, and it likely deserves urgent attention.
