Summary

Riverside Elementary School in Avon, MS, serves 402 students in pre-kindergarten through 6th grade as part of the Western Line Schools district, operating in a very high-poverty area where 99.25% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has shown remarkable momentum in recent years, climbing from a 1-star ranking (308th in the state) in 2023-24 to a 3-star ranking (187th of 377 Mississippi elementary schools) in 2025-26, placing it right at the state median. With a student-teacher ratio of 13.9, class sizes are relatively manageable compared with many nearby schools.

One of Riverside's biggest advantages is attendance. The school's chronic absenteeism rate was just 16.6% in 2023-24, far better than the district rate of 23.5% and the state rate of 23.9%, and better than most nearby schools like Stern Elementary School (33.8%), Webb Elementary School (32.1%), and Akin Elementary School (32.5%). Strong attendance likely helps explain the school's academic gains. Math is a clear bright spot, particularly in 6th grade, where proficiency jumped to 64.3% in 2025-26—well above the state average of 52.7% and the district average of 52.5%. Fourth grade math (48.0%) and 5th grade math (49.0%) also now sit close to or above state averages.

Literacy and science remain areas for improvement. Sixth grade ELA proficiency was 42.8% in 2025-26, trailing the state (48.0%) and the district (59.2%), and is notably lower than same-district O'Bannon Elementary School, where 68% of 6th graders are proficient in reading. Fifth grade science (56.6%) also lags the state average of 71.5% and several neighboring schools. Third grade ELA dipped to 45.4% after a strong 65.4% the prior year, which is worth monitoring. While Riverside and O'Bannon serve similar populations within Western Line Schools, each has different strengths—Riverside excels in 4th and 5th grade math, while O'Bannon leads in 6th grade literacy. Overall, Riverside is showing clear signs of a turnaround, with strong math gains and excellent attendance driving its rise to the state median. Sustaining those gains while strengthening literacy and science will be key to continued progress.

Open Quote While Riverside has had it's issue in the past years it seems the new Elementary Principal is really working to turn things around. She's addressing the problems areas on a daily basis. I think if she continues to work on the elementary school our scores will improve greatly. There are a few teacher that could use (for lack of a better word) an attitude adjustment with the children. Those teachers needs to remember they are there not just to teach but to mentor, encourage, and guide these children. They also need to remember that kindness from them may be the closest thing to kindness they get in a day. Sadly many of the parents in the area choose not to be parents. Most importantly they need to remember to be excited about what they are doing. This seems to be a weak spot for some of them. Close Quote
