Weddington Elementary School

Weddington Elementary School is a small, high-poverty elementary school in Greenville, Mississippi, serving 249 students in grades 1–5 within the Greenville Public School District, where all students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. The school currently holds a 1-star state rating, but that label understates a meaningful turnaround: after falling to the 3rd percentile statewide in 2023–24, Weddington climbed to the 29th percentile in 2025–26 — one of the largest improvements in the area.

The most distinctive pattern at Weddington is the dramatic gap between grade levels. In 2025–26, its 3rd graders actually outperformed both district and state averages in reading (51.1% proficient vs. 48.5% statewide) and math (55.5% vs. 48.8%). But by 4th grade, proficiency falls sharply — just 32.5% in reading and 22.5% in math, roughly half the statewide rate. Fifth grade results are similarly low. This stands in stark contrast to Akin Elementary, just a few miles away, which posts 84.8% proficiency in 5th grade reading and holds a 4-star rating, while Stern Elementary, equally close, ranks even lower than Weddington overall. Since all of these schools serve nearly identical poverty populations, the differences point to school-level factors like instruction and leadership rather than family income.

Weddington's recent improvement is real but fragile, driven largely by one exceptionally strong 3rd grade cohort that jumped more than 30 percentage points in a single year. The school's 13.7-to-1 student–teacher ratio provides smaller classes than many neighboring schools, and chronic absenteeism at 25.7% — while above the state average — is well below the district's 33.9%. The key question for parents is whether the school can carry its early-grade success into 4th and 5th grade, particularly in math, where only about a quarter of upper-grade students are proficient. If the current 3rd graders maintain their momentum, Weddington could continue climbing; if not, the gains could fade. For families, the school offers genuine reasons for cautious optimism, but upper-grade math and reading support deserve close attention.
