Summary

Lawhon Elementary School serves 575 students in grades 2–5 in Tupelo, MS, making it the largest elementary school in the Tupelo Public School District. The district itself is rated 3 stars and ranks 59th of 134 districts in Mississippi, and about 75% of Lawhon's students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024-25, reflecting a high-poverty student population.

Lawhon has experienced a striking decade-long decline. As recently as 2015-16, it ranked 70th of 394 Mississippi elementary schools (82nd percentile, 4 stars). By 2025-26, it had fallen to 191st of 377 (49th percentile, 2 stars). Two factors appear to be driving this slide. First, chronic absenteeism reached 28.5% in 2023-24 — the highest of any nearby elementary school, including Pierce Street Elementary School (26.2%), Thomas Street Elementary School (24.8%), and Carver Elementary School (22.8%) — and it doubled from 13.5% in 2018-19. Second, class sizes have grown: the student-teacher ratio rose from 12.0 in 2022-23 to 14.3 in 2024-25, the highest among Tupelo elementaries.

Academically, Lawhon presents an uneven profile. Math and science are genuine bright spots: 4th-grade math proficiency hit 56.6% in 2025-26, above the district's 45.8%, and 5th-grade science reached 75.2%. However, English language arts lags, especially in 5th grade, where 45.9% proficiency trails the state's 55.8% by nearly 10 points. Compared with nearby schools, Lawhon significantly outperforms Verona Elementary School, which serves a nearly universal poverty population and ranks in the 8th percentile. But it trails Mooreville Elementary School (78th percentile) and Saltillo Elementary School in most subjects, and within the district it sits behind Rankin Elementary School (55th percentile), which has similar poverty but much lower absenteeism at 15.2%. Addressing attendance and literacy will be essential to reversing Lawhon's decade-long ranking slide.
