Summary:

Lee County is a mid-sized Mississippi school district serving roughly 6,343 students in 13 schools spanning elementary, middle, and high school levels, and it earns an overall 3-star rating ranked 66th of 134 districts statewide. That mid-tier ranking, however, hides an enormous range of school quality. Families will find schools that rank in the top 20 percent of Mississippi alongside schools that rank in the bottom 10 percent, often just a few miles apart.

The standout feeder pattern is the Mooreville cluster. Mooreville Elementary School, Mooreville Middle School, and Mooreville High School all earned 4 stars, with Mooreville High School jumping from the 57th to the 82nd percentile in two years while posting the district's best graduation rate at 90.4% and the top scores in Algebra I, English II, and Biology. Mooreville Middle School is equally impressive, with 7th grade math proficiency at 83.9% versus 57.7% statewide. At the other extreme, Plantersville Middle School ranks at the 7th percentile with 0 stars, Verona Elementary School sits at the 8th percentile, and both Shannon High School and Shannon Middle School earn just 1 star. In the middle, Guntown Middle School, Saltillo High School, and Saltillo Elementary School earn 3 stars each.

Math is the district's biggest weakness: Plantersville Middle School's 5th grade math proficiency is just 3.8% versus 49.6% statewide, and the gap between Mooreville Middle School and Plantersville Middle School on the same math tests exceeds 50 points. Science, by contrast, is a bright spot even in struggling schools – Shannon Elementary School posts 84% science proficiency despite only 27.8% in math. Chronic absenteeism tops 50% at both Mooreville High School and Shannon High School, yet Mooreville High School still graduates 90.4% of students versus Shannon High School's 67.2%, showing attendance is not the only factor. The takeaway for parents: Lee County offers some of the best schools in Mississippi in the Mooreville area, but families in Shannon, Plantersville, and Verona face serious math and graduation challenges, making school choice within the district critically important.
