Coldwater Elementary School is a small, rural K-6 school in Coldwater, Mississippi, serving just 213 students in the Tate County School District, where more than 9 in 10 students come from low-income households. It currently ranks in the bottom 15% of Mississippi elementary schools with a 1-star rating, making it the lowest-performing elementary in the district. The school does offer one genuine advantage: with a student-teacher ratio of 11.3, it has the smallest class sizes of any nearby elementary — smaller than East Tate Elementary (15.7), Strayhorn Elementary (14.0), and even the highly rated Lewisburg-area schools.

Coldwater's biggest hurdle may be attendance. The contrast with nearby schools is striking. Lewisburg Elementary, about 14 miles away in the DeSoto County School District, posted 3rd grade math proficiency of 81.7% compared to Coldwater's 41.6%. Lewisburg Intermediate's 5th grade science score of 86.9% nearly doubles Coldwater's 48%. Even Senatobia Elementary, with a still-high 66% poverty rate, outperforms Coldwater in nearly every subject. Yet Coldwater's 2023-2024 school year — when math scores beat state averages in several grades — shows this school is capable of more. The path forward will require improving attendance and providing intensive literacy support while building on those moments of success.
