Summary

Richland High School serves 731 students in grades 7 through 12 in Richland, Mississippi, a small city near Jackson. The school is part of the Rankin County School District, a highly rated 4-star district ranked 25th out of 134 districts in Mississippi. But Richland itself is not keeping pace with its district. After several years ranked near the 60th percentile with a 3-star rating, the school fell to 171st out of 224 Mississippi high schools in the 2025–26 rankings—a 1-star rating and the lowest position it has held in a decade.

That sharp decline reflects real academic challenges. In the most recent MAAP testing, Richland scored below its own district average in every subject, with the biggest gaps in 8th grade science (47% proficient vs. 69.5% for the district) and Biology (47.3% vs. 69%). The comparison with nearby McLaurin High School is especially eye-opening. McLaurin is in the same district, sits just 8.9 miles from Richland, and serves nearly the same share of low-income students (73.4% vs. 73.1%), yet it outperforms Richland by roughly 20 points in Algebra I, English II, 7th grade math, and Biology. Richland also has a chronic absenteeism rate of 23.5%, nearly double the district's 13.7%.

There are bright spots. Richland's graduation rate is a strong 95.5%, comparable to nearby Brandon High School (95.5%) and Florence High School (95.0%), and its student-teacher ratio of 10.3 means relatively small classes. Middle school math scores have also been at or above the state average in recent years. But the school's overall direction is concerning: only 38–50% of students are proficient in core subjects like English II, Algebra I, and Biology, even as nearly all students graduate. That gap suggests many graduates may not be ready for college or careers. The good news is that McLaurin's success with a very similar student population shows Richland's struggles are not inevitable—they can be addressed.
