Summary

Northeast Elementary School in Meridian, MS, serves 730 students from Pre-K through 4th grade as part of the Lauderdale County School District. While the district itself is highly rated—ranking in the 87th percentile statewide—Northeast is the clear outlier among its peers, ranking in just the 27th percentile of Mississippi elementary schools with a 1-star rating for 2025-2026. For context, Clarkdale Elementary School, its highest-performing district peer, ranks in the 94th percentile, making it more than 200 places ahead of Northeast in state rankings.

The school serves a significantly higher-need population than its county district neighbors, with 77.81% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to roughly 45-46% at both Clarkdale Elementary School and West Lauderdale Elementary School. Despite this, Northeast has some favorable metrics working in its favor, including a low student-teacher ratio of 13.1 and a chronic absenteeism rate of 21.0%—better than both the state average (23.9%) and the district average (29.7%). In fact, several higher-performing schools nearby, such as Southeast Elementary School at 29.5%, have worse attendance, suggesting that absenteeism is not the primary driver of the school's academic struggles.

Academically, the most urgent concern is early-grade math: only 21% of Northeast's 3rd graders were proficient in math in 2025-2026, a roughly 28-point gap behind the state average and a sharp drop from 32% the previous year. The school saw declines across every tested subject last year, which contributed to its fall to a 1-star rating. However, 4th grade has historically been a relative strength, with scores sometimes matching state averages. Compared to nearby Meridian Public Schools elementary schools, Northeast performs relatively well; against its own county district peers, it lags significantly. Northeast has shown in past years (2016-2022) that it can reach the 55th-57th percentile, suggesting that with targeted early-grade intervention—especially in 3rd grade math—the school has the capacity to reverse its recent decline.

Open Quote Northeast Elementary is a wonderful school. My child has attended for two years and loves it. The administration communicates with parents by phone or mail on a regular basis keeping us informed about current events and up to date need to know information. The staff is friendly and very helpful. I feel my child is receiving a great education in a safe secure environment. She is a straight A student. If I had one thing to suggest...summer tutoring camp to prep children for the upcoming school year. I'm very pleased with Northeast Elementary. Close Quote
