Summary

Clausell Elementary School is a small K-5 school in Jackson, MS, serving 231 students within the Jackson Public Schools district, where every student qualifies for free/reduced-price lunch. The school has experienced a dramatic decline in its statewide ranking, falling from 279th in 2023-2024 to 372nd out of 377 Mississippi schools in 2025-2026 — placing it in the bottom 1% of the state with a zero-star rating. This decline is steeper than any nearby school: while John Hopkins Elementary improved from 349th to 290th and Isable Elementary rose from 364th to 340th over the same period, Clausell dropped 93 places.

Academically, math is the school's biggest concern. In 2025-2026, only 11.1% of 3rd graders, 11.4% of 4th graders, and 16.7% of 5th graders met math proficiency standards — less than half the district average in every grade. Math scores also collapsed from the previous year, with 3rd grade dropping from 27.4% to 11.1% and 4th grade from 35.3% to 11.4%. Reading tells a more encouraging story: 3rd grade ELA proficiency (27%) matches the district average, and 5th grade ELA (40%) is close to the district's 44.3% and well above nearby schools like Bates Elementary (30%) and Wilkins Elementary (28%).

Chronic absenteeism is a serious obstacle. In 2023-2024, 43.8% of Clausell students were chronically absent, nearly double the state rate of 23.9% and well above the district's 30.1%. This likely contributes to the school's academic struggles. A nearby comparison is revealing: Ambition Preparatory Charter School, serving a similarly high-poverty population just 2.64 miles away, posts far stronger results — 48.1% 3rd grade math proficiency versus Clausell's 11.1% — and has a chronic absenteeism rate of just 24.3%. Clausell does have one structural advantage: a low student-teacher ratio of 14.2:1 and the smallest enrollment in the area. With better attendance and targeted math support, those smaller class sizes could become a real asset.
