Summary

Lake Cormorant Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Lake Cormorant, Mississippi, serving 635 students as part of the DeSoto County School District, a solidly above-average district ranked 45th out of 134 in the state. But the school itself has been sliding. After years as a reliable 4-star school, Lake Cormorant Elementary has dropped to a 2-star rating and now ranks 216th out of 377 Mississippi elementary schools (43rd percentile) for 2025–2026. Just a few years ago, in 2020–2021, it ranked in the 83rd percentile. The decline has been steady and is visible across multiple subjects.

The school's biggest strength is in the early grades. Third graders at Lake Cormorant scored above both the district and state averages in ELA (51.5 vs. 45.8 district and 48.5 state) and math (48.6 vs. 44.1 and 48.8). Fourth grade math is also a bright spot at 54.0, well above the state's 51.5. But something falls apart by 5th grade. Fifth grade math proficiency is 35.9 — nearly 14 points below the state average — and 5th grade science plunged to 53.0 from 74.7 the year before, a stunning 22-point drop that now trails even lower-ranked nearby schools like Walls Elementary (64.3) and Southaven Elementary (60.9). Interestingly, Southaven Intermediate School, which has weaker 3rd and 4th grade scores, actually beats Lake Cormorant in 5th grade math and science.

Context matters here. Lake Cormorant serves a student body where 65.8% qualify for free/reduced lunch, roughly double the poverty rate at Hernando Hills Elementary (36.6%) and Oak Grove Central Elementary (30.7%). Chronic absenteeism also runs high, at 28.0% in 2023–2024, compared with 15.5% at Hernando Hills. The student-teacher ratio has risen to 17.1 from 13.4 two years prior. The school still outperforms several higher-poverty neighbors like Horn Lake Intermediate and Shadow Oaks Elementary in the early grades, so the foundation is there — but recovering its former 4-star status will likely require targeted help for upper elementary students and a serious effort to improve attendance.
