Summary

Walls Elementary School serves 722 students in grades PK through 5 in Walls, MS, and is part of the DeSoto County School District, which is rated 3 stars and ranks 45th out of 134 districts in Mississippi. The school serves a largely economically disadvantaged population, with about 69% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Academically, Walls Elementary School is currently below district and state averages in nearly every tested subject and grade level. Its state ranking has declined sharply over the last decade, from a 4-star, 87th-percentile school in 2015-16 to a 1-star, 25th-percentile school in 2025-26.

The widest academic gaps appear in 3rd and 4th grade. For example, 4th grade ELA proficiency is 29.4% at Walls, versus 50.2% for the district and 52.4% statewide. In 3rd grade math, only 26.1% of Walls students are proficient, compared to 44.1% for the district and 48.8% statewide. Notably, Lake Cormorant Elementary, just 3.13 miles away with a similar poverty rate (65.8% vs. 69.0%) and similar chronic absenteeism (28.0% vs. 26.2%), dramatically outperforms Walls in 3rd and 4th grade—including 3rd grade math (48.6% vs. 26.1%) and 4th grade ELA (50.5% vs. 29.4%). This suggests that demographic factors alone do not explain Walls' struggles; there may be addressable instructional or school-culture differences.

There are some bright spots. Walls' 5th grade ELA proficiency (50.9%) exceeds several nearby schools, including Lake Cormorant Elementary (49.6%), DeSoto Central Elementary (47.9%), Southaven Intermediate School (48.3%), and Southaven Elementary School (45.7%). Its 5th grade science score (64.3%) also beats Lake Cormorant Elementary (53.0%), Southaven Elementary School (60.9%), and Horn Lake Intermediate School (57.5%). Chronic absenteeism sits at 26.2%, about the same as the district (26.4%) but far better than Horn Lake Elementary School (33.8%) and Shadow Oaks Elementary School (32.9%), while still well above Hernando Hills Elementary (15.5%). Walls also has the most favorable student-teacher ratio among nearby schools at 15.0 students per teacher, yet this has not translated into academic gains—suggesting that targeted interventions, attendance support, and instructional quality may be more impactful levers going forward.
