Summary

Armstrong Junior High School is an 8th-grade-only middle school in Starkville, MS, serving 358 students and operating within the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District. The school has earned a 4-star rating and ranks 75th out of 260 Mississippi middle schools (71st percentile), a remarkable improvement from just a few years ago when it held a 2-star rating and ranked around the 45th percentile. With a student-teacher ratio of 10.2-to-1, the school offers smaller class sizes than nearby Partnership Middle School (12.3) and Overstreet Elementary School (12.9).

Academically, Armstrong is a standout in mathematics. Its Algebra I End-of-Course results have been extraordinary, with 100% proficiency in 2025-2026 and 95-100% in each of the past three years. This far exceeds the district's 70.1% and the state's 66% proficiency rates. In fact, neighboring Partnership Middle School also achieved 100% Algebra I proficiency, indicating a strong district-wide math acceleration pathway. Armstrong also outperformed the state average in every core subject in 2025-2026: ELA (44.8% vs. 40.9% state), math (57.8% vs. 51.4% state), and science (61.5% vs. 57.8% state). The school's 8th-grade math proficiency has nearly doubled from 30.5% in 2022-2023 to 57.8% today. Notably, Armstrong's 8th-grade ELA scores outpace Fifth Street School's 7th-grade ELA (44.8% vs. 33.3%).

Despite serving a student population where about two-thirds qualify for free/reduced lunch, Armstrong has achieved results that exceed state averages — a meaningful equity story. However, two challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism, at 23.6%, affects roughly 1 in 4 students, more than double the pre-pandemic rate of 11.1%, though it's slightly better than Partnership Middle School's 24.8% and equal to Fifth Street School's rate. Overstreet Elementary School has a notably lower rate at 14.7%. English Language Arts remains the school's relative weak point, though it still beats the state average. If Armstrong can improve attendance and strengthen literacy instruction, it has the potential to become one of Mississippi's strongest middle schools.
