Summary:

Pontotoc City School District serves approximately 2,400 students across five schools in Pontotoc, Mississippi, spanning grades PK through 12 with a unique grade-band structure: Pontotoc Elementary School covers PK–2, DT Cox Elementary School covers 3–4, Pontotoc Middle School covers 5–6, Pontotoc Junior High School covers 7–8, and Pontotoc High School covers 9–12. The district ranks 21st out of 134 Mississippi districts, landing in the 84th percentile with a 4-star rating. DT Cox Elementary stands out as the district's strongest traditional elementary school, ranking 86th out of 377 Mississippi elementary schools, with 4th grade math proficiency at 73.9% versus the state's 51.5%. Pontotoc Middle School also impresses in math, with 5th and 6th grade proficiency around 71%, roughly 20 points above the state average.

Pontotoc Junior High School has been a consistent 4-star performer, ranking 66th out of 260 middle schools two consecutive years, with strong 7th grade math (68.0%) and 8th grade science (65.7%) scores. Pontotoc High School shows mixed signals: Algebra I proficiency is excellent at 79.6% versus 66.0% statewide, and English II exceeds the state, but Biology sits slightly below the state average and the school's ranking slipped from 64th to 78th. All five schools serve similar high-poverty populations, with free/reduced lunch eligibility ranging from about 71% to 73%, yet the district still outperforms the state in mathematics at every tested grade level.

The most serious concern is chronic absenteeism. Pontotoc High School's rate of 36.8% is nearly 13 points above the state average of 23.9%, while Pontotoc Middle School (26.0%) and Pontotoc Elementary School (24.8%) are also above the statewide figure. DT Cox Elementary, by contrast, has the lowest rate in the district at just 16.3%. ELA results are inconsistent — 7th grade ELA dropped sharply to 35.4%, below the state, though 8th grade ELA improved to 47.7%. Overall, this is a high-performing, high-poverty district where strong math and middle-grades science provide genuine bright spots, but improving attendance, especially at Pontotoc High School, will be essential to sustaining its strong ranking.
