Copiah County School District

Copiah County School District serves roughly 2,077 students across four schools in central Mississippi — Wesson Attendance Center (K–12), Crystal Springs Elementary (K–4), Crystal Springs Middle School (5–8), and Crystal Springs High School (9–12) — and is rated a 3-star district, ranking 56th out of 134 Mississippi districts. Every school serves an almost entirely economically disadvantaged population, with free/reduced lunch rates between 99.75% and 100%, yet academic outcomes vary dramatically from school to school.

Wesson Attendance Center is the clear academic standout. In 2025–2026 it beat the state proficiency rate in 15 of 17 reported tests, including 81.2% in 3rd grade math, 82.6% in 5th grade math, and 88.4% in Biology. It also has the district's lowest chronic absenteeism rate at 16.8%, well below the state average of 23.9%. By contrast, the three Crystal Springs schools lag far behind. Third grade math proficiency is just 20.5% at Crystal Springs Elementary, and Biology EOC proficiency is 45.2% at Crystal Springs High School — gaps of 40 to 60 points compared to Wesson Attendance Center. Even so, Crystal Springs Elementary is showing positive momentum, moving from the 29th percentile in 2024–2025 to the 39th percentile in 2025–2026.

Crystal Springs High School posts a strong graduation rate of 88.8%, above the district's 86.8%, but its chronic absenteeism is the highest in the district at 35.2%, and its end-of-course test scores are well below state averages. Crystal Springs Middle School made impressive math gains — 7th grade math jumped from 13.4% to 47.3% — yet ELA remains weak across the district's upper grades. The bottom line: Wesson Attendance Center is the district's top performer, attendance strongly tracks achievement, and English language arts is the biggest area of need, even at the strongest school.
