Summary:

Amite County School District is home to one elementary school, Amite County Elementary, serving grades K–6 in the rural community of Liberty, Mississippi, with 486 students and a 12.8:1 student-teacher ratio.

For parents, the standout story is a school that beats the odds. Despite 100% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch and a chronic absenteeism rate of 34.8% (well above the state's 23.9%), Amite County Elementary consistently earns a 3-star rating and ranks around the 51st–54th percentile statewide. Its strongest subject is 5th grade science, where 76.9% of students scored proficient in 2025-2026 versus 71.5% statewide. Math is also a relative strength: 4th grade (59.7%) and 5th grade (61.6%) both outperformed their state averages that same year. The school performs near the overall state average in combined subjects, which is impressive given the high level of economic disadvantage.

The biggest concern is English language arts, especially in early grades. Only 29.4% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA in 2025-2026, a 19-point gap behind the state, and 6th grade ELA also lags at 37.1%. The good news is that 4th grade ELA jumped 10 points to 50.7%, nearly closing the gap, and 5th grade ELA is right at the state average. Year-to-year swings in math (3rd grade dropped from 57.7% to 38.8%, while 5th grade rose from 45.2% to 61.6%) suggest cohort-level variability rather than a consistent trend. With a favorable student-teacher ratio and clear strengths in science and upper-elementary math, the school has a solid foundation; addressing early literacy and chronic absenteeism would be the most impactful steps to raise its already respectable performance.
