In 2025–2026, Underwood earned a 2-star rating and ranked 255th of 473 Minnesota schools — the 46th percentile. That marks a three-year slide: the school was at the 73rd percentile (4 stars) in 2023–2024, then 68th percentile (3 stars) in 2024–2025. Test scores tell a similar story. Math proficiency dropped from 45.79% in 2024–2025 to 31.4% this year, well below the state's 44.9%. Reading came in at 37.4% (state: 48.6%) and science at 23.9% (state: 25.5%). For comparison, Battle Lake Secondary (96th percentile) and Kennedy High School (92nd percentile) score higher across the board, while Ashby Secondary sits at a similar overall rank (47th percentile) but with much weaker completion results. Results also vary noticeably from one group of students to another, so the overall dip is not uniform across the school.

Completion outcomes are a real strength. Underwood's 2024–2025 graduation rate was 90.9% (state: 84.9%) and its dropout rate 3.6% (state: 4.2%) — far better than Ashby (12.5%), iQ Academy 9-12 (10.3%) and Fergus Falls Area Learning Center (25.6%). Class sizes have also improved, with the student-teacher ratio down from 16.9 to 14.5. Grade-level scores show pockets of strength, such as 7th-grade reading at 47.7% (above the state's 43.5%), alongside weaker spots in 8th-grade reading, math and science and 10th-grade reading. Because the school is small, single-year swings can be noisy, but the three-year decline is worth watching.
