Hermantown Middle is a mid-sized suburban school serving 677 students in grades 5–8 in the Hermantown Community Schools district just outside Duluth, and it is currently the top-ranked middle school in its region and among the top 7% of middle schools statewide. For 2025-2026 it placed 40th of 546 Minnesota middle schools (93rd percentile, five stars) — the strongest single-year result in its reported history. The longer trend matters just as much: the school has climbed from the 75th percentile in 2015-16 to 93rd, and it has improved its rank position in each of the last three years even as the pool of comparison schools grew.

Compared with nearby schools, Hermantown is well ahead. It sits 28 rank positions above Ordean East Middle School (88th percentile) and far above Cloquet Middle (75th), A.I. Jedlicka Middle School (65th), and Lincoln Park Middle School (41st) — and it is the only five-star school in that group. In 2025-2026, 64.4% of students were proficient in reading (15.8 points above the state), 55.4% in math (10.5 points above), and 29.2% in science (3.7 points above). The most striking finding involves students from low-income families: the school ranks 9th of 458 schools statewide for that group (98th percentile), up from the 77th percentile the year before. That group is small, though, so one strong year isn't a guarantee of a lasting trend. Special education students also jumped, from the 40th percentile (two stars) to the 74th (four stars). Watch items are few but real: fifth-grade science (26.4%) sits essentially at the state average (25.9%), math slipped from 60.82% to 55.4%, and science results before 2024 came from a different exam, so they aren't directly comparable.
