Summary

Harriet Bishop Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Savage, Minnesota, serving around 550 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Harriet Bishop Elementary has consistently ranked in the middle range of Minnesota elementary schools, with mixed performance on state MCA-III tests compared to district and state averages. The school's math and reading proficiency rates have been around 40-50%, which is generally higher than the district but lower than the state. However, Harriet Bishop has performed better on the science test, with proficiency rates around 30-50%.

The school has a diverse student population, with significant representation of African American, Hispanic, and Asian students. While African American students have performed well, ranking in the top 30-35 out of around 300 Minnesota elementary schools, Hispanic and English language learner students have struggled, ranking in the middle to lower range. This uneven performance across subgroups suggests the need for targeted interventions and support. Additionally, Harriet Bishop's academic performance has declined in recent years, which may be related to the increasing percentage of students from low-income families, now over 65%. Compared to nearby schools in the Prior Lake-Savage Area School District, which consistently rank in the top 25-30% of Minnesota elementary schools, Harriet Bishop has room for improvement.

Open Quote I really love this school! My daughter started reading just before she turned 4 and I moved to Burnsville so she could open-enroll in this school. I love their approach to balancing the academic needs of the gifted/talented kids while not making them feel "special" for being smart. While this school is a G/T Magnet school, it's also a neighborhood school so you get kids of all abilities. All the kids are met where they are and no one is made to feel better/less than their peers (at least as far as 2nd grade, which is the grade my daughter has completed). I volunteered to help during their reading period when she was in Kindergarten when I was self-employed. Even though all of the kids were at very different levels, they were all engaged and making progress (my job was to keep kids on task while the teacher worked with small groups).

The teachers have been really amazing so far and the PTO is very strong. I can't say enough good things about this school! Close Quote
