The school itself ranks 597th of 869 elementary schools statewide — the 31st percentile, 2 stars for 2025-2026.

On this year's tests, Harriet Bishop scored 41.5% in math, 39.1% in reading, and 19.0% in science — above its district (28.2%, 35.8%, 11.6%) in all three subjects but below the state (44.9%, 48.6%, 25.5%) in all three. Within its own district it leads on overall rank and on math and science; only Edward Neill Elementary edges it out in reading. The bigger story is the long slide: Harriet Bishop was a 4-star school as recently as 2018-2019, sitting in the 78th–81st percentile, and has since settled in the low 30s. Some subgroups show real strength: African American students have ranked in the 73rd–90th percentile statewide for three straight years (all 4-star), and special education rankings improved from the 18th to the 46th percentile. Other groups, including Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low-income students, rank lower. The school's free/reduced-lunch rate fell from 65.82% to 52.45% in one year without a matching lift in results. In short, Harriet Bishop is the strongest elementary in its district and the weakest school in its immediate neighborhood — with clear pockets of effective practice to build on.

I really love this school! My daughter started reading just before she turned 4 and I moved to Burnsville so she could open-enroll in this school. I love their approach to balancing the academic needs of the gifted/talented kids while not making them feel "special" for being smart. While this school is a G/T Magnet school, it's also a neighborhood school so you get kids of all abilities. All the kids are met where they are and no one is made to feel better/less than their peers (at least as far as 2nd grade, which is the grade my daughter has completed). I volunteered to help during their reading period when she was in Kindergarten when I was self-employed. Even though all of the kids were at very different levels, they were all engaged and making progress (my job was to keep kids on task while the teacher worked with small groups).

The teachers have been really amazing so far and the PTO is very strong. I can't say enough good things about this school! Close Quote
