Alden-Conger Elementary, at 215 N Broadway in Alden, MN, is a PK–6 school of 229 students in the Alden-Conger Public School District, a small rural district in southern Minnesota about ten miles from Albert Lea and Wells.

The school's 2025-26 results sit below its own district's averages in all three subjects, and it ranks 714th of 869 Minnesota elementary schools (18th percentile, 1 star). Math proficiency is 23.2%, reading 33.8%, and science 12.9%, against statewide rates of 44.9%, 48.6%, and 25.5%. Notably, Alden-Conger has the lowest poverty indicator (34.5% free/reduced lunch) and smallest classes (10:1) in its comparison group, yet the group's lowest math proficiency. Halverson Elementary, with roughly double the poverty rate (69.7%) and a 14.9:1 ratio, posts math proficiency more than twice as high, and Lakeview Elementary beats it by 32 points in math. Nine miles away, United South Central Elementary — similar poverty (45.2%), similar staffing (12.3:1) — ranks at the 82nd percentile with 66.8% math, 60.8% reading, and 32.8% science, showing what is achievable nearby.

The decline has been steep and broad. The school sat at the 66th–72nd percentile in 2015-16 through 2017-18, then fell in nearly every year since to 18th. From 2024-25 to 2025-26, math fell from 38.8% to 23.2%, reading from 43.0% to 33.8%, and science from 15.6% to 12.9%; science, a strength as recently as 2022-23, is now about half the state rate. Results also worsen sharply by grade: grade 3 math is 44.4% and grade 4 is 33.3%, but grade 5 is 9.7% and grade 6 is 5.1% — both under 10% — with reading following a similar pattern. Every reported student subgroup ranks in the bottom quartile or worse. With only 229 students, single-year swings deserve caution, but the pattern appears across subjects, grades, and years. The stronger early grades and the nearby high-performing peer suggest the problem is concentrated in the upper grades and recent years rather than inevitable.
