Summary

Karner Blue Education Center is an alternative public school located in Blaine, Minnesota, serving grades K-9 with a total enrollment of 102 students. The school is part of the Northeast Metro 916 school district and is focused on providing an alternative educational environment for students who may not thrive in a traditional school setting.

Karner Blue Education Center consistently underperforms the state and district averages in proficiency rates for MCA-III Math and Reading assessments across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's overall proficiency rate in MCA-III Math is 14.86%, compared to 45.21% for the state and 13.94% for the Northeast Metro 916 district. Similarly, the school's overall proficiency rate in MCA-III Reading is 12.82%, compared to 49.59% for the state and 12.92% for the district. However, the school has a very low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 3 to 3.4 students per teacher over the past three school years, significantly lower than the nearby schools.

Karner Blue Education Center has also seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 16.67% in 2021-2022 to 56.86% in 2023-2024, which is higher than the nearby schools. This suggests that the school may be serving a population with significant socioeconomic challenges, which could contribute to the school's academic underperformance. Despite these challenges, the school's specialized instructional approach, as evidenced by its low student-teacher ratio, may be a strength, allowing for more personalized learning experiences for students who may not thrive in a traditional classroom setting.

Open Quote My Son goes to this school and I am very pleased with the teaching staff and all the help he receives. I don't know what we would do without this school, they are able to help him learn with his ADHD and Autism and there resources are great! Close Quote

Open Quote Teachers a snobby and clicky. Paraprofessionals will be asked to not come back after year one if they call out once for a medical reason even you have a doctors note. There isn’t much “teaching” going on in this school. It’s more chasing around the kids and making sure they don’t hurt themselves or other people. It was a good idea in theory but doesn’t deliver.
