Summary

The Journey School is a public charter elementary school located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, serving grades K-6 with a total enrollment of 113 students. Despite its small size, the school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Minnesota elementary schools over the past 5 years.

Academically, The Journey School underperforms the state average in both math and reading proficiency across all grade levels. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 7.14% of students were proficient in math, compared to the state average of 45.21%, and just 12.68% were proficient in reading, compared to 49.59% statewide. This performance is significantly lower than nearby charter schools like Great River Elementary, which had 35.37% math proficiency and 65.31% reading proficiency, and Twin Cities German Immersion Charter, which had 50.27% math proficiency and 70.97% reading proficiency.

The Journey School faces additional challenges, with 81.42% of its students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2023-2024, indicating a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.1 to 15 students per teacher over the past 3 years, this has not translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's persistent underperformance suggests that addressing the school's curriculum, teaching practices, and leadership, as well as the broader socioeconomic factors impacting student success, will be crucial in order to provide a quality education for the students of The Journey School.

Open Quote I found out from my child that at least seven teachers and staff quit or left since September. It is only February. The communication is not good at this school. I do not suggest sending your child to this school. Close Quote
