East Grand Forks Public Schools serves its elementary students at two schools that split the grade levels between them: New Heights Elementary for PK–2 and South Point Elementary for grades 3–5. Together they enroll 934 students, and because they cover different grades rather than the same grades, they work as complementary schools instead of direct competitors, with families generally moving from one to the other as children progress. The district as a whole ranks 219 of 458 in Minnesota, at the 52nd percentile with 3 stars.
South Point Elementary is the only one of the two with current test and ranking data, and that data shows a school performing below both its district and the state. New Heights Elementary has current free/reduced-price lunch and student-teacher ratio figures but no current test scores or recent ranking history, so its achievement cannot be judged or compared. Its only rank record is from 2002–2003, which is too old to be meaningful today. On need and staffing measures it shows slightly higher figures: 40.28% FRPL and a 16.1 student-teacher ratio, versus 35.86% and 14.9 at South Point. For parents, the clearest current signal is South Point's below-district, below-state results, while New Heights remains an open question on academics.
