Summary

Whitehall Ealy Elementary School in Whitehall, MI, serves roughly 400 students in grades 3-5 and is part of the Whitehall District Schools, earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the 72nd percentile statewide—well above the Michigan average.

What truly sets Whitehall Ealy apart is its combination of strong academics and cost efficiency. In 5th-grade ELA, proficiency hits 60%, compared to just 30.6% at Holton Elementary School and 20% at Oehrli Elementary School, a nearby school just 1.35 miles away. The school also excels with specific student groups, ranking in the 84th percentile for Hispanic students and the 83rd percentile for low-income students—a sign that it's effectively closing achievement gaps. Chronic absenteeism is notably low at 19.7%, far better than the district's 29.6% and the state's 27.9%. All this is achieved while spending $13,766 per student, which is significantly less than schools like Marquette Elementary School ($22,735 per student, 2nd percentile) and Holton Elementary School ($16,911 per student, 28th percentile).

However, there are areas to watch. Support for special education students has been volatile, dropping from the 62nd percentile in 2023-2024 to the 4th percentile in 2024-2025 before recovering to the 22nd percentile. Additionally, recent proficiency rates dipped from the prior year—3rd-grade ELA fell from 64.7% to 45.2%—which could be a cohort effect or a developing trend. Compared to its sister school, Shoreline Elementary School (grades PK-2), which shares similar demographics, Whitehall Ealy's strong performance suggests the district's approach pays off as students advance. For parents, this is a high-achieving, efficient school that delivers excellent results for a diverse student body, though special education support deserves closer scrutiny.

Open Quote I like Whitehall district schools in general, but this is my daughters first year at Ealy and I've had nothing but problems with there office not contacting me when my daughter gets hurt or when she is sick! Also I've continually had problems with my daughter being sick all the time now, when we lived in our previous school district, she was never sick! Close Quote
