Summary

Waverly Middle School in Lansing, MI, serves 451 students in grades 7 and 8 as part of the Waverly Community Schools district, and it has faced significant academic and attendance challenges in recent years.

For parents, the most pressing concern is the school's academic performance, which falls well below state averages across nearly every subject. For example, only 13.1% of 7th graders were proficient in math on the M-Step, compared to the state average of 33.3%, and 8th-grade PSAT math proficiency was just 8.9% versus the state's 33.2%. English Language Arts and science scores show similar gaps. Perhaps the most critical issue is chronic absenteeism: 45.9% of students were chronically absent in the 2024-2025 school year, meaning nearly half of the student body missed substantial instructional time. This rate is far higher than the state average of 27.9% and even exceeds the district's own average of 34.6%. The school also shows a notable decline in outcomes for specific groups, including Hispanic students and those receiving special education services, whose statewide rankings have dropped sharply in recent years.

When compared to nearby schools, the differences are stark. For instance, Kenneth T Beagle Middle School in Grand Ledge achieves 7th-grade ELA proficiency of 47.8% and math proficiency of 33.8%, while DeWitt Middle School posts even higher numbers. Interestingly, Waverly spends more per student ($15,922) than either of those schools, yet serves a student population where 54.99% qualify for free or reduced lunch—a much higher percentage than at nearby higher-performing schools. One relative bright spot is 8th-grade social studies, where 39.8% of students are proficient, the school's strongest subject and closest to the state average. The data also suggests a possible "middle school slide," as students arriving from East Intermediate School show higher ELA proficiency in 5th and 6th grades than Waverly's 7th graders, pointing to a critical area for the district to investigate.

Open Quote Fantastic school, with just a recent amount of inner city kids who want the school to be bad or have a infamous attitude. I don't know why though. The school has a nice surrounding area and very good schools around it. If they closed where people live who could go to the school it would be a lot nicer. I love this school and 60% of the children that go here want it to be a good school, but the other 40% are holding it back. I would like more children to come here and see the smart children that go there the funny, cool, urban lifestyle that many of us have but yet 40% are keeping the school from it's full potential and are driving into the ground causing us to get bad scores from websites such as the very one your on. Please give Waverly a chance especially if you have young children because the elementary schools are fantastic it's just this last 4 years the worst batch of children possible came and caused us this. The Waverly community is a loving one and everyone cherishes the warrior name. Thanks for reading Close Quote
