Summary

Grayson Elementary is a K-5 public school in Waterford, MI, serving 437 students as part of the Waterford School District.

Grayson sits in the middle of the pack academically among Michigan elementary schools, but it has some notable bright spots. The school shows real strength in upper elementary reading: 4th-grade ELA proficiency hit 55.2% and 5th-grade reached 45.7%, both outpacing state averages. This is a consistent trend, with 4th-grade reading topping 60% in the prior year. Another standout is the school's work with its Hispanic students, who ranked in the 76th percentile statewide—a dramatic jump from the 30th percentile just three years ago. The school also does well getting kids to class, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 17.4%, far better than the district (25.6%) or state (27.9%) averages. However, 5th-grade math is a persistent weak spot, with proficiency at just 27.1%—below the state average and a multi-year challenge that doesn't appear in earlier grades.

Compared to nearby schools, Grayson holds its own within its district. It outperforms Donelson Hills Elementary School and Riverside Elementary School in nearly every subject, but trails top-tier district peers like Schoolcraft Elementary School and Cooley Elementary School, especially in math. The contrast is even sharper with schools in the neighboring Pontiac City School District, where Alcott School and Owen Elementary School post proficiency rates that are often half of Grayson's. Interestingly, Grayson's performance is on par with North Sashabaw Elementary School in the highly-ranked Clarkston Community School District, though it lags far behind that district's Pine Knob Elementary School. For parents, Grayson offers a solid, improving option with strong reading instruction and good attendance, though you may want to ask about extra math support for older students.

Open Quote Teachers and staff are passionate about their students. I believe they are some of the best teachers. Teachers have worked with me to help me understand where my students are struggling, they work to inspire students to be self motivated. When difficulty has happened they have done their best to resolve issues.
The one negative is the bus driver shortages that all districts seem to have currently. But Grayson is doing it's best to make drop off/pick up efficient and safe Close Quote
