Summary

Marion High School is a small, rural public school in Marion, MI, serving 192 students in grades 6 through 12 within the Marion Public Schools district, where over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school has shown a remarkable ability to bounce back. After a very difficult 2022-2023 school year, when it ranked in the bottom 10% of Michigan schools, it made a dramatic turnaround the very next year, jumping 400 places in the statewide rankings. While it has settled somewhat since that peak, it remains well above its crisis point. One of its clearest strengths is 7th-grade math, where 56% of students were proficient in the most recent school year—far exceeding the state average of 33%. The school also does a decent job supporting students from low-income backgrounds, with these students performing at or above the level of similar peers across the state in recent years. However, there are notable challenges. Chronic absenteeism is a persistent issue, running between 34% and 44% over the past five years, which is significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, while the school excels in middle school math, that success doesn't always carry through to college readiness. Only 43.8% of 11th graders were proficient in the reading and writing portion of the SAT, compared to the state average of 52.1%.

Compared to nearby schools, the picture is mixed. McBain High School, just 7.5 miles away, is a high-performing school with a 98.5% graduation rate and a 4-star rating, while Marion's graduation rate is 77.7% with a 5.5% dropout rate. This gap likely reflects the much higher poverty rate at Marion. Interestingly, Marion's 7th-grade math scores actually surpass the 9th-grade math scores at the larger Cadillac Senior High School, but Marion lags well behind Cadillac in SAT scores for juniors. The school's graduation rate is higher than Evart High School (75.2%) and comparable to Lake City High School (77.9%), but lower than Pine River Area High School (91.7%) and Harrison Community High School (94.5%). In short, Marion is a school with real strengths in middle school academics and a demonstrated capacity for improvement, but it faces ongoing hurdles with attendance and ensuring students are fully prepared for college by the time they graduate.
