Ottawa Hills High School

Summary:

Ottawa Hills High School is a public high school located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 369, predominantly African American (69.92% in 2022-2023). The school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing high schools in Michigan and struggling with low academic performance, graduation rates, and high chronic absenteeism.

Despite the school's per-student spending reaching $21,257 in 2022-2023, Ottawa Hills High School's academic performance remains significantly below state and Grand Rapids Public Schools district averages. In 2022-2023, only 6.12% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in M-Step/Social Studies, compared to 36.1% at the state level and 29.6% in the district. The school also has low graduation rates, ranging from 57.5% to 78.8%, and high dropout rates, ranging from 10.3% to 20.2%, which are worse than state and district averages. Additionally, Ottawa Hills High School has consistently high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 60.9% to 79.1%, significantly higher than the state and district.

These challenges are not unique to Ottawa Hills High School, as other nearby schools in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, such as Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy and Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue, also struggle with low academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and high percentages of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Addressing these systemic issues will require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that addresses the complex factors contributing to the school's underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was a Substitute at this school once and I would never go back. The "students" in this school are out of control, aren't interested in learning and don't respect anything or anyone. The best part of this school for the teachers is that the absentee rate is 50. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
