Summary

Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue is a public dual-language (bilingual) school in Grand Rapids, MI, serving 378 students in grades 7-12 within the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, where a majority of students (67.7%) qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most remarkable thing about this school is its perfect graduation rate. For the 2024-2025 school year, 100% of seniors graduated and the dropout rate was 0%. This is a dramatic improvement from the prior year (94.8% graduation) and far exceeds the district average of 83.2% and the state average of 84.0%. In fact, this puts Southwest ahead of nearby schools like Grand Rapids Public Museum High (92.7%) and Grand Rapids Montessori MiddleHigh (95.8%), and it towers over Southeast Career Pathways (69.8%). This suggests the school has a very effective support system for keeping students on track to finish high school, even if standardized test scores are lower than state averages.

There are also pockets of strength in the middle school grades. In 2025-2026, 8th graders scored a 50% proficiency rate on the PSAT English Language Arts exam—higher than the district average of 45.7%—and 27.1% were proficient in science, which is above the district's 22.2% and a big jump from just 8.7% two years earlier. However, this academic success doesn't fully carry into high school, where 11th-grade SAT scores lag behind district and state averages. The school also spends a substantial $17,571 per student, reflecting a strong investment in its bilingual program and high-needs population. Chronic absenteeism (30.8%) is a concern but is improving and is much better than the district's 41.3%. Overall, this is a school that clearly prioritizes getting every student to graduation, with notable middle school strengths, even as it works to boost high school academic performance.

Open Quote This school is a joke. They can't even hire enough teachers to work here. My daughter said in 3 of her classes they literally do nothing the entire hour. Substitute teachers are there just babysitting disruptive, troubled kids. Do not send your kids here. I'm currently trying to get her into a legit school. Close Quote
